Make your own lava lamp!

Ellen

MAKE YOUR OWN LAVA LAMP! A science experiment that explores density and chemical interactions ✨

To make it, you’ll need 👇

- Empty clear jar or plastic bottle

- Water

- Vegetable Oil

- Food colouring

- Alka-Seltzer tablets

- Spoon

Directions 👇

- Fill your jar/bottle with water until it’s half full

- Add your food colouring to the water (whatever colour/colours you wish!)

- Fill the rest of the jar with your oil (here is a good way to also chat with your young person about why the oil and water don’t mix - as the water is heavier than the oil, which causes the oil to float!)

- Break your Alka-Seltzer tablet up and place it into the jar, piece by piece.

Watch the interaction between the Alka-Seltzer and the water/oil. The Alka-Seltzer tablets create a gas called carbon dioxide when mixed with water, and that gas is what forms the bubbles 🫧
